11. Gopinathpur Odisha

  • Gopinathpur a village come under the Panchayat of Khamar, Block : Palahara, Dist : Angul, Odisha. The Gopinathpur is located in interior where the nearest railway connectivity is more than 75km and Bus stand is approx. 21km. The area is tribal belt area where majority population believed in Hinduism and only 10 -12 families are belonging to Christian community.
  • The public transport facilities is not available even in day light too, so villagers are depending upon own arrangement. The current facilities is not available 24/7, the medical facilities is not available. There is not a single government office or building is not available near the convent or within 10Km. The road condition is somehow good but few sections are very miserable during the rainy seasons. The power cut are common things in this area, and after dark if power supply is not available then the entire area of the convent is dark.
  • According to the sisters and others villagers, the movement of the wild animals is frequently shown near the convent after dark such as beer & wild elephant. And it is not safe to go outside after darks. Even it is unsafe to go the church and to their own fields after darks due to wild animal’s movements.
  • Considering all the aspects of the mission and we have given a title called “SATHY” which means friendly with the people of the areas while engaging ourselves in the raising of human dignity of all castes and religions basically for women, children and youth then preserving the wild animals and forests.
  • The SATHY is meant for creating a bridge with locality and sisters and gain the confidence during any panic situation like attack of wild animals and any other natural or un natural accidents. The locality is male dominated society that is why the wild life conservation theme is use on which the male members of the families can involve and the mind set about the people will be change.
  • The title SATHY is having 3 categories such as Wildlife Conservation, Women Empowerment, and Youth.
  • Wild Life Conservation is the local issue which has started since last 15-16 years and villagers are suffering a lot due to the interference of Wild Elephant in their locality. The farmers are losing their livelihood in interval of time due to the rampage of crops by the wild animal. The SATHY is designed after lookout the issues and the solution. The Convent plays a vital role when this continues its activities in Gopinathpur as well as others nearest area of Palahara region.
  •  Women Empowerment is the process to aware the women of the villagers regarding other option of income rather than selling of local wine (Handia). The SATHY have another category related to them i.e Women Empowerment. Gopinathpur area is mostly tribal area and the main source of income is Paddy Crop and seasonal Mahua collection. But most of the family are involved in local bear manufacturing and selling. Through this the women have option to choose some other trade for income purpose such as Broom manufacture, Jelly Jam by using Papaya, Mahua Laddo, Mahua Pickles, Mahua Biscuit and many more. The sisters are trying to train women to stitch their wearing garments since market is very far from the village and it has no transporting means to buy easily even if they need urgently.
  • Youth Empowerment and involve in social responsibilities activity is necessary for upcoming generation. Youth is the future of all community and we need to communicate with them in every interval of time so that a relationship will be build-up and they can share their problems and though directly with us. They are in learning stage, which means we need to guide them time to time, counselling, share of information, provide platform to them for express their ideas, and we should provide awareness to them regarding the consequences of any crime or bad habits.

All this above three models are design by looking towards the future of the community, as well as the improving life style of the community. Gopinathpur is the men society, by help of this title the women can establish their importance in their society.

Thank you !
